Bullet Train – a service of opportunities
With the estabilshment of the foundation stone of the Ahemedabad – Mumbai high speed corridor the country is eagerly waiting for it to start. The construction of the corridor began on 14 September 2017 as scheduled and end by August 2022. The bullet train is scheduled to leave for its first run on 15 August, 2022.
Creation of opportunities
It is been expected that the project would be providing more that 20,000 jobs directly or indirectly. The direct employment would be nearly of 4,000 in the operation and maintenance of the corridor.
Its operation would also provide indirect opportunities for vendors, shopkeepers etc as new stations would build up.The Highspeed Rail Training centre would also create a spark of opportunities.
Cost of project
The project is estimated to cost ₹1.1 lakh crore (US$17 billion). The cost includes interest during construction and import duties. JICA(Japan International Cooperation Agency) agreed to fund 81% of the total project cost ₹88,087 crore (US$14 billion), through a 50-year loan at an interest rate of 0.1% with a moratorium on repayments up to 15 years and the remaining cost will be borne by the state governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat. 20% of the components used on the corridor will be supplied by Japan, and manufactured in India.
Fares
Fares are proposed to be 1.5 times that of a First-Class AC ticket on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Duronto Express. As of January 2017, a First-Class AC ticket from Mumbai to Ahmedabad costs ₹2,000, which would make the cost of a high-speed rail ticket ₹3,000.
